Chapter Nineteen

On his way off base, Stan passed right by the Tranquility Inn. He was going to meet Ronnie at Mo and Gen’s campsite. Sit in on one of the therapy sessions, but he’d be damned if he’d participate.

Ronnie was the only one that had earned the right to hear about his pain.

He had to stop for an errand first. Hopefully it wouldn’t take too long — and there wouldn’t be any trouble.

The deputy that was following them — or actually the ex-deputy, discovered during his research — had been at Willet County for several years. That made it likely she was working for the cops and deputies looking for him. But she also quit after shooting a kid on duty. They ruled it wasn’t her fault, but there was a public outcry for her head.

She quit. Husband divorced her and moved away with their only daughter. She found the bottom of a bottle and never seemed to find her way back out. It didn’t stop her from opening a private investigation business — something to which he couldn’t help feeling a stab of regret and jealousy — and spent her time working on cases that helped battered women.

Mostly without money.

So maybe Jeanette Gustoff wasn’t working with the authorities. But she was obviously passionate. And her crusade aligned against Stan if she believed the party line that he had something to do with the rape and murders of girls all over Florida.

He just wanted to have a talk with her. And if she wouldn’t talk, he would scare her away. And if she wouldn’t scare easily, he would … escalate his position.

It was difficult to judge the hotel guests by the cars in the lot. He had no way of knowing if she was even there. It was doubtful she checked in with her real name. Probably paid in cash. Likely a lot of money for a room in Key West with no reservation.

He didn’t bother parking in a spot far from the door. Without knowing which room she was in, he couldn’t hide from her. It didn’t really matter though. If she was in, they would chat. If she wasn’t, he’d have a look around.

He got out of the BMW. Shrugged his jacket up so he could button it, making sure it didn’t swing open to reveal his pistol in the holster against his ribs. Slid his old badge into the inside pocket.

Through the front doors, and he cut away from the front desk. Into the common area where each TV was tuned to a different news channel. The remnants of the free breakfast scattered across a couple of greasy tables.

Only one table had anybody at it. A couple still in their jammies trying to corral two hyper kids making laps around the room.

It would have been easier had she been here. He shrugged as he grabbed a piece of cold bacon. Tipped it at the look of hollow-eyed frustration the father gave him as he walked by.

The bacon was actually pretty good, which wasn’t surprising.
