Chapter IX - Concert
The sun had dipped below the horizon by the time John's train rolled into the station. It was a short ride from Brno, but to John it had seemed like a never-ending journey. The agents greeted Sedo as he entered the apartment and they began the debrief immediately. Eyebrows arched around the room as John recounted his meeting with Kohlmann.
âYou stumbled into him? Just like that?â Ogilby said, incredulity leaking through his usual composure.
It was nice to see them again, but above all, he missed his Allison. There was a lot of ground to cover and it took them a while to go through it. The devil is often concealed in the details.
John was reluctant to make a decision regarding the fate of Dolewotska just yet. He was undoubtedly a nasty piece of work, but time was not pressing regarding him if a sniper kill was decided upon. An assassination required surveillance and finding an opportune moment to strike.
The other agents wanted to discuss their course of action immediately. They had been idle for several days, so saw no need for a break. John, however, requested one until the next day and the others granted it. They all knew what was on his mind. An address hadn't been provided for the concert, so John went to check if Niles was home.
It was already evening and John hurried toward their apartment. He was anxious that her father was absent, since Sedo didn't know where Allison was performing. In his mind, he was already convincing himself to scour the bars of Prague to find the one with her in it, if the Lakehill residence proved empty. He rushed up the stairs and knocked on the door with clammy hands.
âWelcome back, John. Now, what might you want?â The taunt poorly hidden.
John didn't even bother answering, but just smiled at Niles who broke out in a laugh. âHere's the address. Tell her that her father still exists and that you're not the only man in the world.â
He winked at John who immediately sprang down the stairs and into the night clutching the note in his hand.
He made it to the bar in record time and found it to be full, but he made his way in anyway. All attention was on the performer who was in the middle of a song. John tried to be considerate, but could not wholly avoid some looks and angry mutterings as he made his way to the front.
Just as he got there and could finally see the sweet one, the song finished. Gorgeous as ever, smiling and thanking the audience for their kind applause, she suddenly spotted John. She shrieked in excitement, quickly put down her guitar and ran to him. Her childlike delight made him so happy, his mouth stretched uncontrollably, warmth flooding in his chest and he stood ready as she threw herself into his arms and kissed him.
The crowd was surprised when Allison abandoned the stage but quickly started cheering the young love.
