Chapter 30

He’s dead. No, give him time. Doctor, he’s not breathing!

I’m in the same room as before but separate, somehow. I hear their agitated voices, trying to revive one of them, one of us, an injection that had an unexpected result. Words like trembling, seizure, reverse the procedure, saline drip. They’ll come for me eventually. Usually I’m last. Am I the youngest, or maybe the oldest? Strongest, the least likely to die on them before they extract their data? I feel their energy from twenty feet away, clustered around one patient, their angry, nervous energy, frustrated that all their knowledge can’t accurately predict human behavior in response to stimuli. That’s what they call it, I’ve heard them mumbling in the far-left corner of the lab where they think we can’t hear. But their voices are near a heating grate in the floor. Under my feet, I feel the vibration of their words—not actual words but the energy of them, the fury of them. They’re experimenting on us, and some of us are dying. I’m about to be next.
