Chapter 15

Most high-rises were equipped with landing pads on the roof. They were used for medical emergencies, rescuing people during a fire or some other natural disaster, and things like international military colonels coming to the rescue.

“How are we going to get up there without authorization?” Lee asked as they entered the hub.

“Pay attention,” Mina instructed. She marched up to the head of transpo, relieved to see that this particular hub was overseen by a bot.

“How may I help you?” The bot was a male twentysomething with shaggy brown hair and an affable smile. A good choice to calm people down who were in a hurry and stressed out.

“We need access to the roof,” Mina said. “Do you handle those requests, or do we need to find a concierge or security guard?”

Without batting an eye—because why would he?—the bot replied, “Only approved personnel of the Meridian are allowed on the roof.”

“What about PPF or federal agents?”

“PPF or federal agents are allowed on the roof if there is a building-wide emergency declaration.”

“What about a medical emergency?”

This bot saw nothing extraordinary about Mina’s line of questioning. He was required only to answer each individual question with whatever was preprogrammed in his data bank. He wasn’t programmed to be suspicious.

“If one of our residents has a medical emergency, PPF, Meridian personnel, and agents will be allowed on the roof.”

“Check your system.”

“I have not been alerted to any such emergency.”

“Check again,” Mina instructed. “There should be something coming in—”

“A medical emergency drone has just been cleared to land on the roof.” The bot cocked his head like he was listening to instructions, which he might be. Mina couldn’t spot any canal phones, but communication could be airmelded right into his core, which was certainly a benefit to placing bots in these positions. “Agent Kane and Agent Adams are cleared to meet Mr. Raphael on the roof and escort him down to his residence on level fifty.”

Mina popped her badge on holo and elbowed Lee to do the same. “Scan these, please.”

The bot was quick and efficient. “You’re cleared to go up. Any tube will get you there, just swipe your DNA. Have a nice day.”

They turned and headed to the modest wall of tubes, four to a side, unlike the fleet of tubes at The Bella.

“How did you know Vince was coming in as medi?” Lee asked.

Mina stuck her finger in a helix slot. A tube door opened, and they stepped inside.

“There are limited choices when you have to land in a no-access zone. Medical emergencies are the easiest.”

“Yeah, but…” Lee was genuinely confused. “How did Vince find a resident in this building so fast? And get it approved so quickly?”

“The man is a top-grade military official,” Mina offered. “This is not his first foray into the medi-landing-on-roof strato.”

“Yeah, but…” Lee continued to sputter. Then he shook his head. “Okay. But it’s kind of cool. You knew what he was going to do before he told you. Then you prepped the bot for it because you knew it was coming.
