“Sir, you need to see this,” Ronan Haynes said, flicking on the senator’s bedroom light as he entered without knocking, a first for both men. He carried a tablet in his hands.

“God dammit,” McKinney said, his voice gravelly as his eyes snapped open. There was an empty scotch glass on his bedside table and his eyes were dark and baggy. “I told you I wasn’t to be disturbed.”

“The security system just triggered in the villa in Cannes,” Haynes said, offering the tablet to his master.

“Tilley’s place?” McKinney asked, immediately more alert. He groped for his bedside lamp and turned it on before snatching the tablet from Haynes’s fingers. “Who is it, the cops?”

Haynes shook his head. “It’s him. And he’s got company.”

McKinney pulled himself upright so that his back was level with the headboard. He squinted at the screen in his palms. “That bitch,” he snarled.

“It looks like they’re working together. Makes sense.”

“I take it the villa hasn’t been cleaned?”

Haynes shook his head, endeavoring to keep his features bland. “There wasn’t time.”

“Fuck. Do we have sound on this thing?”

“No.”

McKinney looked away from the screen for the first time, his eyes wide. A potent combination of fury and fear burned in his now-wakeful eyes. “Can they see this in New Eden?”

Haynes nodded, glad he was standing a couple of feet back from the bed.

The senator hurled the tablet computer toward the nearest wall. The glass screen shattered on impact and the metal chassis punched a hole in the wall. Plaster dust coursed toward the floor.

Haynes struggled to keep his tone even. He wanted to grab his boss by the lapels and yell at him that both their lives were on the line. But he swallowed that though, like so many over the years. “What do you want me to do?”

“Get ahead of things for once!” McKinney snarled. He took a few seconds to compose himself then growled without a hint of contrition, “Put a bounty out on the woman. It’ll raise fewer questions. Do it quietly but make sure the right people know. She’ll need documents and transportation if she wants to run. If we get her, it looks like Gideon comes as part of the package.”

“How much?”

“Whatever it takes.”
