âSir, you need to see this,â Ronan Haynes said, flicking on the senatorâs bedroom light as he entered without knocking, a first for both men. He carried a tablet in his hands.
âGod dammit,â McKinney said, his voice gravelly as his eyes snapped open. There was an empty scotch glass on his bedside table and his eyes were dark and baggy. âI told you I wasnât to be disturbed.â
âThe security system just triggered in the villa in Cannes,â Haynes said, offering the tablet to his master.
âTilleyâs place?â McKinney asked, immediately more alert. He groped for his bedside lamp and turned it on before snatching the tablet from Haynesâs fingers. âWho is it, the cops?â
Haynes shook his head. âItâs him. And heâs got company.â
McKinney pulled himself upright so that his back was level with the headboard. He squinted at the screen in his palms. âThat bitch,â he snarled.
âIt looks like theyâre working together. Makes sense.â
âI take it the villa hasnât been cleaned?â
Haynes shook his head, endeavoring to keep his features bland. âThere wasnât time.â
âFuck. Do we have sound on this thing?â
âNo.â
McKinney looked away from the screen for the first time, his eyes wide. A potent combination of fury and fear burned in his now-wakeful eyes. âCan they see this in New Eden?â
Haynes nodded, glad he was standing a couple of feet back from the bed.
The senator hurled the tablet computer toward the nearest wall. The glass screen shattered on impact and the metal chassis punched a hole in the wall. Plaster dust coursed toward the floor.
Haynes struggled to keep his tone even. He wanted to grab his boss by the lapels and yell at him that both their lives were on the line. But he swallowed that though, like so many over the years. âWhat do you want me to do?â
âGet ahead of things for once!â McKinney snarled. He took a few seconds to compose himself then growled without a hint of contrition, âPut a bounty out on the woman. Itâll raise fewer questions. Do it quietly but make sure the right people know. Sheâll need documents and transportation if she wants to run. If we get her, it looks like Gideon comes as part of the package.â
âHow much?â
âWhatever it takes.â
