Before taking the tray into the patient’s room, the nursing assistant should check to make sure the patient is receiving the correct tray. Check the patient’s armband and compare it to the name and room number on the tray. Check to make sure the patient’s tray contains foods that are appropriate for the patient’s ordered diet. Raise the patient’s head of the bed, and place a towel over him to prevent bits of food from falling into bed. If the patient requires further assistance, cut any large pieces of food into bite-size pieces and open any containers.
