The rest of the town wasnât too far away, just as Selena predicted. It was the largest section of the cave theyâd seen, almost canyon-like. They walked through a flat open area, surrounded by mountainous peaks and crevices. Their helmet lights revealed the faces of buildings lining the hills around themâquiet ancient structures, splintered wooden walls, windows that were cracked or clouded with dust.
âWhat a ghost townâ¦â Selena said, examining the structures. It was like a graveyard of houses.
âThey look so lonelyâ¦â Lauren said.
âWhat does?â
âThe houses. Theyâre so colorless and old. So alone down here. Itâs kind of sad.â
âDonât worry about it,â Trent said. âThe people who lived down here died a very long time ago.â
âWhy are all the buildings intact?â Selena asked.
Trent wasnât following her. He shined his lights across a row of small rickety buildings. âWhat do you mean?â
âIf this town was swallowed by an earthquake these buildings would have been demolished,â she said. âI could believe one or two might have survived the fall. But all of them? Itâs not plausible.â
âMaybe somebody put them back together,â Lauren said.
âWho?â
Lauren shrugged. âThe ones who survived the earthquake. Iâm sure some of the townspeople werenât around when the ground swallowed the buildings. Maybe they came down here and built this as a memorial to the people they lost.â
âIf this was a memorial then how come nobodyâs ever heard of it before?â Selena said. âYouâd think this would be a huge part of the local legend. It would also be a pretty big tourist attraction.â
âMaybe the people who constructed it wanted to keep it a secret,â Lauren said.
Trent stepped between them to end the conversation.
âWe should search the buildings,â he said. âSee if thereâs anything useful here.â
âLike what?â Selena said.
âAnything we can use,â he said. âMaps, ropes, fuel, weapons.â
âWeapons?â
âIf weâre down here long enough we might have to start hunting pig,â Trent said. Then he turned to the others. âSplit up. I donât want to spend all day here.â
