Chapter 12

Still reeling from the surprise from Jason, Teresa was in the kitchen cooking side dishes to accompany the burgers, steaks, hot dogs, and chicken Andrew was cooking on the grill. Taylor was chopping onions and celery for the potato salad, when they heard the side door open.

“Hey Mom.”

“That must be Austin coming in from school.” She called out, “Austin come into the kitchen after you drop off your backpack.”

“Alright, I’ll be down in a minute.”

Taylor could hear him walking up the steps that led to his room. “Dad is on the grill. I can smell it all the way up in my room. Aww snap, Jason is here.”

“He must have just looked out his bedroom window. Step aside, he’s going to be running out that door.”

Just like Teresa said, Taylor could hear the running footsteps. She did as instructed, then stood over by the sink out of the path to the back door.

“I forgot he was coming today,” Austin said as he ran into the kitchen. Grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl, he kissed his mother on the cheek, then waved. “Hi Taylor.” He was halfway out the door when he stopped, turned back and stared at her.

“Hi Austin.” Taylor smiled.

“Holy shit.”

“Austin.” Teresa gasped.

“Oh sorry, Mom.” His eyes never left Taylor’s. “Umm…umm…. Hey.”

“Hey yourself. How was school today?” Taylor asked, hoping to give him time to gather himself.

“What?”

“How was school?” She repeated. “I didn’t get to do the public school thing. I had a private tutor because I was on the road a lot.” She turned and continued dicing the celery. “But I remember during the summer months I was so ready for the lessons to end so I could enjoy the sunshine. I bet you’re happy when school ends?” She turned back to ask him.

He nodded, “Yeah.” Then he cleared his throat and walked back over to her extending his hand. “I’m sorry. I’m Austin, Jason’s brother.”

“Yes, I know,” she smiled. “It is so nice to meet you, Austin. But your mother said you guys are huggers. May I hug you?”

“Yeah,” he pulled her into his arms and hugged her.

“Hey…hey…hey, get your hands off my woman.” Jason walked in the back door.

“I don’t know Jason,” Taylor beamed. “Your little brother is kind of cute.”

“I keep trying to tell him I got it.” Austin turned to his brother’s open arms.

“It’s good to see you man,” Jason said as he hugged him.

“I can’t believe Lil Tay is in our house,” he whispered.

“Her name is Taylor,” Jason corrected.

“I know…I know…but I can’t believe she is here you know, like really here,” Austin declared.

“Well get used to it.” Jason gave him a playful shove. “She’s going to be around a lot.”

“Are you two getting married like they said on the internet?”

“Austin don’t ask questions like that,” Teresa chastised. “Have you talked to your sister today?”

“Yeah,” he responded with his eyes still on Taylor.

“Did she say what time she was going to be home?” Teresa asked.

“Man, get your eyes off my woman and answer your mother.
