Kai watched on the cameras as Dean pulled out a zippered case and opened it to reveal a set of tools that she knew well. Despite herself, she grinned. Somehow she never would have guessed that Dean was a B&E kind of guy. She’d been half expecting him to ring the doorbell, for all the world like he was paying a social call. If he had, she would have laughed, but this was much better. He hadn’t even glanced at the doorbell. He was going straight for the locks. Then again, he was a SEAL. He was used to going where he wasn’t wanted, and a battering ram wasn’t something that he could employ now that he was a law-abiding special agent. Of course, neither were a set of lock picks, and that certainly didn’t seem to be stopping him. He really was getting more and more interesting by the second.

She got up from her chair and went over to pick up Lionel’s external drive, sliding it into a black canvas bag. Keeping one eye on the monitors, she reached for her own backup drive. Dean had made quick work of the bottom lock and was working on the deadbolt now.

Her mind went back to the conversation at the old farmhouse. The two men seemed to be convinced that Dean was selling out agents overseas. Presumably they had worked with him and knew him. She was pleasantly surprised to find that Dean was willing to bend the rules enough to break into her apartment, but they seemed to think it perfectly conceivable that he was capable of being a traitor. Why? Why would they think that? Breaking and entering was one thing; treason was quite another.

Kai frowned, zipping the bag closed and carrying it over to set it by the door. In her very extensive research into Dean’s background, she had found absolutely no indication that he was anything other than what he appeared to be: an ex-SEAL who had shifted from serving his country in the military to serving it in the CIA. He had traded one boss for another, but still defended the same flag. There were no ghosts in Dean’s closet. She knew because she’d been looking for them, and she was very good at uncovering what people wanted to keep hidden. He was exactly the Boy Scout that everyone thought he was; everyone except those two men in his own agency. Now why would they think differently?

A sudden click from outside the office made her raise her eyebrows and swing her gaze back to the monitors. Dean had cracked the deadbolt. She glanced at her watch and went back to the desk, looking at her Jericho lying next to the keyboard. Picking it up, she tucked it into her holster in the small of her back as she shifted her gaze to the monitors, watching as he opened the door and stepped inside.
