TWELVE
I took a wrong turn somewhere because I found myself smack-dab right in the shitty middle of a nest.
Another species I wasn’t familiar with.
Whoever, or whatever, sent the spores, eggs, and gods knew whatever else, they were reaching and made sure exotic creatures were involved too. Because it shocked and took people, even the military, off guard. Hell, the Governs (HOB Galaxy Government) didn’t send the military to exterminate stations anymore. They hired expendable teams. Like the Skull Daggers, and so many more. They didn’t want the blood on their hands, in other words.
The creatures held residence in a room much larger than the cafeteria. Blanketed with egg pods and strange, red webs, I couldn’t tell what the room used to be. A gym, maybe?
It was so well constructed I didn’t realize where I walked until I noticed the red webbing. From there, I noted the thousands of egg pods.
I stopped walking and looked around for the best way to escape. Only thing I spotted was a door about one hundred feet ahead, though draped in red webs.
I’m no expert, but if a web was disturbed, wouldn’t that alert the spiders, or whatever the fuck occupied the maybe gym?
Shit, I felt like a noob soldier. All nervous and jumpy. Not scared though. Shit, even when I was a noob, I didn’t scare easily.
I blamed Australia…
Okay, not really. But I did blame my childhood. I mean, who got over a bug slaughtering your family, then killing said bug only to gain some weird healing and strength ability? My family were torn apart before my very eyes, and there I was. Not able to move until the monster came at me. If only I had done something to stop it before. Maybe my parents would still be alive. Maybe I wouldn’t be who I was today.
It’s what I deserved for being a coward.
Survivor’s guilt was a motherfucker.
Carefully, I made my way down the narrow passage toward the door. I was considered crazy, but, shit, I didn’t even know what I was dealing with yet. I could only be crazy if I at least had an inkling to what wanted to eat me. And, maybe I was as crazy as people thought. Typically, I didn’t care what a bug or alien could do to me. As long as I made sure they were dead. If people saw that as crazy, well, then…I was a batshit nutball.
Soft chitters floated through a small opening in the red weds to the right.
I swallowed a thick lump in my throat and continued to the door.
More chitters rose out of the silky webs surrounding me. Webs which entangled themselves around the egg pods.
The stuff didn’t cover the door, but rather hung over it. Like a fucked up veil.
The chitters grew louder, becoming a sound that reminded me of a rattlesnake. I turned back to the room.
Not good.
Subtle movement behind a large, red bundle caught my eye not far in a slight rise off the floor. The entire massive room rose and fell like foothills.
