‘You tried to call?’

‘I did,’ Cathy admitted the following morning. ‘But I’m surprised that you’re even talking to me.’

‘Because of Saj?’ Suzalinna asked. ‘Honestly, that’s the last thing I’m thinking about. Let him have his bit of fun sleeping in the spare room for all I care.’

‘Oh, Suz, he’s not.’

‘He is. Came home after eleven last night and set up camp there. Said I had invaded his privacy. I thought after being married for nearly seven years, we didn’t need any privacy. Honestly. He can be such a child at times. All I did was look at his phone.’

‘I’m worried.’

‘About us? Don’t be. It’ll pass. Now, have you got any news for me?’

Cathy sighed. ‘I called last night to warn you I had put my foot in it with Saj earlier, that was all.’

‘Why were you talking to him, anyway?’ Suzalinna asked. ‘He wouldn’t explain anything, just went to bed in a huff.’

‘Oh, he was doing a post-mortem for me.’

‘Really? So, you’re now requesting personal dissections, are you? Come out, spit it. Why was he involved? You know it never works that way.’

‘As it happens, it was Sara Wiseman’s mother. I put stroke on the death certificate but I had a niggle.’

‘Did you really, Cathy Moreland? And why might that be? I don’t suppose it’s because Sara is your number one suspect for another death that night and you think she might just be a double murderer?’

‘When you say it like that, it sounds absurd.’

‘But that’s what you’re thinking, isn’t it? Sara’s been on my mind, too. She has a motive for sure. I heard that there was a good deal of flirting going on during the meal that night. She and Michael were carrying on as if they were a pair of silly teenagers and certainly didn’t seem to remember that they had both made their marriage vows to other people.’

‘Why would she kill him then?’ Cathy asked, despising herself for even falling in line with this conversation.

‘Something odd happened that night. There was a bit of coming and going at the table. A few of them got up to go to the loo, and they were having the buffet, so there was that too. It seems that Michael left the table to take a telephone call. Sara went missing for a bit around the same time. When she did come back, something had changed.’

‘What?’ Cathy asked, unable to help herself.

‘Difficult to say. Ettie was puzzled herself. But the mood had altered.’

‘Oh, so Ettie was your source? You’ve pumped Jennifer already and moved on to her?’

‘What else could I do? Saj won’t have noticed a bloody thing at that meal and anyway, he’s not talking to me.’

‘He told me that one of the secretaries had been to visit Michael’s widow.’

‘Oh, I know that, darling. Sorry to steal your thunder. I’d like to visit the lovely Victoria myself, but I can’t think of the best route in…’

‘Suz, please don’t. It’s totally inappropriate. I can just about accept you speaking to
