Mummy

They grabbed my elbows and yanked me out of bed. I’m not sure if they had unnatural strength or if fear made me surrender to their will. I caught a glimpse of Lucy sitting upright in her bed, her eyes wide with terror. She did it! She must have done! She betrayed me! My throat throbbed with the urge to scream, but before I knew it, they shoved me out of the room, propelling me down the corridor. Sharp, twisted nails dug into my skin. I was powerless against them. The demon night nurses dragged me towards my execution.

They carried me down flights of stairs and through endless, dim corridors. The eyes on the walls jeered at me, cheering the witches on. Then a poisonous stink of decay shot through my nostrils, as they pushed me through a long, rounded passageway, as if through a giant sewer pipe. There was a door at the end of it with a small window at its centre. It was encased in black cast iron bars, secured by dense latches, like something from a Medieval prison. The eerie glow of satanic candles flickered ominously from within.

The witches carried me towards the door with purpose, my body moving against my will, until I was thrust through it and flung onto the damp ground like an unwanted toy.

“Mummy will see you now,” a noxious voice hissed behind me.

I raised my head, barely able to hold it upright, and found myself inside a tomb, the air heavy with musty dampness. The slimy stone walls glistened, as if dripping with sweat. Bathed in candlelight, they looked blood-orange.

An Egyptian sarcophagus that towered above my useless frame. Painted on top was the woman’s likeness, the same woman who haunted Clearlake from top to tail. The whites of her eyes were gold, reflecting the candlelight. They glinted as if alive, as though possessed.

The witches hoisted me up before I could catch my breath, my legs dangling helplessly beneath me, and shoved me towards the sarcophagus. My insides sank, refusing to move any closer, but I had no choice.

One of the witches twisted my arms behind my back, as though trying to break my bones. The other stepped out in front, opening the tomb like a closet. An odour of stale rot diffused through the air, and I saw black bones draped with dirty rags. A corpse! It was a real Mummy, and I was being propelled towards it, into its casket.

I started to scream like I’d never screamed before. But it was in vain. Another push, and I was inside, face to face with the bandaged, rotten cadaver. The door banged shut behind me. I was trapped in a coffin. Tight pressure gripped my chest, and my throat felt like snakes were ripping it apart from within. I banged my fists against the cold walls. Sharp pain, like lightning, flashed through my whole body. The hardness of the iron was unforgiving. My hands began to swell and throb.

I shouted, tears streaming down my cheeks without control, and a tsunami of nausea engulfed me.
