Those four years are all a blur to me now, but I know we lived through them, one day at a time.

I remember an afternoon when Rui Pais leant us his car and we set off with a Brandenburg concerto in the tape deck. The sky’s the limit, I thought as we sped along, the countryside flashing by outside the window. The sky’s the limit.

It was as if I’d kidnapped you and we were on the run. Not from anything in particular; just for the pure thrill of being on the run together, racing faster and faster onwards.

But we weren’t really on the run: nothing and nobody was after us. We weren’t even fleeing the daily routine, since I had no such thing and you appreciated the shape yours gave to your days.

I wanted to be like you, a creature of timetables and routines. But I wasn’t: I thrived on the unexpected, disorder and mess, tearing up the world I knew to see what surprises were revealed.

I liked to set off all of a sudden and with no plan, just see what we found. Dropping in on villages we had no idea existed, off the main roads and even the maps, talking to people, letting them tell us a bit of local history, which restaurant to eat in, where I’d find the best table, the best wine, the best bread, the best sheep’s or goat’s cheese, the best of everything they had. All for you.

Making love in chance hotels, opening the curtains in the morning and seeing a place we didn’t know.
