“I don’t get it,” said Teila. “There’s an entire world out there. Why do you think it’s doing so much damage here? What is it about Muskegon?”

“It’s Sheena, isn’t it? It’s because she’s here?” asked Justin.

Jasmine unzipped her backpack. “It’s like Stephen Woodruff’s book.” She pulled out her copy. The pages were filled with sticky notes of all colors.

“Someone’s been doing some research,” said Teddy.

“A lot of what I’m reading is so similar to what’s happening, like the Murk read this book.”

“That doesn’t sound right,” Justin said.

“Anyway, it talks about a city full of people with remarkable gifts.” Jasmine opened the book. “Good people that helped the whole world.”

“What happened to them?” Ariel asked.

“The dark force Stephen Woodruff talks about in the series destroyed most of them.”

“Is that a coincidence?” asked Justin.

Cameron grabbed the book. “Let me see that.”

I listened to my friends going back and forth, round and round with their theories. As I watched them, one thing was suddenly clear to me. It was just as Nana told me. A type-one gleamer was close to someone who would do something great one day—maybe something that would change the world. That person was right there in Muskegon. And if my assumption was right, he or she was right there in my basement. That’s what the Murk was after. Ridding the world of that kid and whoever could stop the Murk from reaching them. All the while, it continued with its mission to create a hopeless generation.

I exhaled heavily and looked down at my trembling hand. Chana grabbed it and rested it on the sofa.

“There’s something else,” said Cameron, lifting the television remote again. “I didn’t want to start with the worst.”

“There’s something worse?” I asked.

Cameron nodded and went to a site that showed video footage of some kind of rally. “This is live streamed.”

The video quality was poor, but we could see the teen who stood on a makeshift stage over everyone else.

The boy’s hair was shoulder length. He couldn’t have been more than sixteen. The way he spoke was familiar. But it was what he said that made the hairs on my neck and arms stand on end.

“Who is this guy?” asked Teddy.

“I don’t know,” I replied.

“What’s he saying? Turn it up,” said Corey.

Cameron turned up the volume.

The boy’s voice boomed. “They don’t understand us. Acting like we’re the enemy, but we’re the future. We’re the ones who have to fix what they destroy. Us. We are the light,” he said with his fist raised.

A room full of teens applauded him and cheered, shouting his name—Phoenix. He looked around at them and his eyes flashed red.

“Oh my gosh,” I said, holding my chest.

“What?” Jasmine asked.

“It’s found someone to work through.”

“How do you know?” asked Teddy.

“His eyes.” That was all I was willing to explain.

Everyone sat in silence, watching.

Phoenix glanced off-stage. “Allow me to say hello to a friend, would you?”

“Go ahead, Phoenix!” a girl with a high-pitched voice shouted.

He turned to the camera. “Hello, Sheena. And may your vision be true.
