NINETEEN

In which our hero passes on vital information

Early the next morning, Orlov opens his curtains wide and ties them back so there can be no doubt he needs to talk to Zelle. Despite his disgust at the ministry having brought his mother into it, he allows himself a brief stab of excitement that he is going to play the role of informant for the first time.

During a quiet moment at the market, Citizen Vanev wants to know what Orlov thought of his first meeting of the People’s Front. “So, comrade, would you like to join us?” he asks.

“I do not believe Comrade Weisz will vote for my admittance,” says Orlov.

“Do not trouble yourself regarding Weisz,” says Vanev. “He has an angry soul. You need only a simple majority. If you become a member and show loyalty to the cause, they will accept you in time, even Weisz.”

“And what of the new party?” asks Orlov. “Will you become its leader?”

Vanev dismisses this so quickly that Orlov wonders if he has hit a nerve. “No, no, no,” says Vanev. “There will be a complicated election process. The Workers’ Party is larger than us, so I dare say one of their people will be chosen.”

It occurs to Orlov that his ability to gather useful information will be much improved if his friend and colleague wins a significant role in the new party, perhaps even leader. With intelligence coming right from the top, perhaps he would have a better chance to please Zelle and bring this strange episode to a swift conclusion. He determines to ask Zelle for advice on what he can do to promote Vanev’s chances of reaching the top.
