“They’ll be a live band at Marty’s tonight, right?” Holly asked as they drove home after work.

“Yeah. Every Friday night.”

“Then I want to change into a pair of heels that are an inch shorter before we head to the Towne Café.”

Linda spotted Gwynn as soon as she walked through the door, hurried over to her and gave her a brief hug. “How are you doing after that shooting?”

“Fine, but I jump with the slightest strange noise,” Gwynn said, “I guess that’s normal.”

Linda patted Gwynn’s shoulder. “Sweetie, you’re holding up great. Turk told Janice all about it and she filled me in. Oh, the car chase. We’re just happy that Dave’s going to be okay and you weren’t hurt.”

“Thanks. So am I,” Gwynn said and gestured toward Holly. “Susan came into town the following day and having her in the house helps. Oh Linda, this is Susan, my cousin. Susan, this is Linda, the nicest person in town.”

Linda’s cheeks turned red and the two women greeted each other.

“I’ve got to get back to work,” Linda said. “Why don’t you two take the booth next to the window and I’ll bring you some waters.”

When Linda placed two glasses of water and the menus on the table, Gwynn asked, “Are you going to Marty’s tonight?”

“Can’t. I wasn’t scheduled to work here tonight, but Betty’s sick. I have to fill in. Doing a double shift. I need to deliver some orders.” She hurried to the kitchen.

“She’s Janice’s sister?” Holly asked for verification.

Gwynn nodded. “They don’t look or act anything alike.”

“Do you think she has a clue about anything going on?”

“Not a lot. I get the impression she knows more than she’s mentioned to me. I can’t believe after sixteen years she doesn’t know who Patrick’s father is. Janice doesn’t strike me like a woman that could keep a secret that long.”

“If she’s blackmailing Hayes, she might be a little hush about that.”

Linda strolled back to their table, “Ready to order?”

“We’ll both have the special,” Gwynn said without consulting Holly.

“Good choice. Anything to drink besides water.”

“No.”

“I’ll have that right out,” Linda said and disappeared into the kitchen.

“Janice wouldn’t tell her sister about blackmailing Hayes, if that’s what it is,” Gwynn said. “She’d probably call it child support. On another matter, do you think you could finagle Turk to take us to the Bamberg tank battery?”

“That’s where the oil for the Cisco unit is stored and picked up, right?”

“Yes. And the Lander unit. I thought about asking Dave under the pretense I wanted to know more about the company operations, but it’ll be a while before he can drive and feel comfortable walking around on the site.”

“What are you thinking?” Holly asked.

“I just want to go there and check it out. I have the legal description and know the general location, but not how to get to the specific site. Asking one of the guys to give me the directions is a little too obvious.”

Linda returned to their table carrying two plates of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and string beans.
