Elizabeth allowed herself a momentâs reverie, on reading her auntâs letter. She felt a great pang of love for that sensible, uncompromising, slightly strict and unnerving woman. Nature had fit her for a governessâ post, or perhaps a smart Sloane Square headmistress â but birth had made her a lady, with all her natural authority gone to waste.
It would have been pleasant, perhaps, if she had had it in her to bow her head and accede to her auntâs judgement. But â sensible though she might be â this was advice based on sentiment, not upon sense, and Elizabeth could not bow to it.
She would not see both their families bankrupted, for the sake of a pretty and useless reputation, that one could not eat nor wear nor dance a jig to if it be played.
Her mother wrote her also, and this letter was more amusing to read.
