Mira was one of the many pretty girls who was staring at and giggling at Lebas. They ended up chatting during her break. She was only eighteen years old. She hadn’t gone to high school, and had only completed middle school. Lebas advised her to enrol in a program that would give her a high-school equivalency degree.

‘It is a pity when a girl as pretty as you doesn’t pursue her education. Certainly you don’t want to be a cigarette roller for the rest of your life,’ Lebas said. Then he called her Sweet Mira. The girl giggled at him, but informed him that she was waiting for her man to pick her up at the factory gate.

Tegar called his brother over with a disapproving gaze. Lebas found this odd, as his elder brother had always taught him to socialize with the workers and develop personal relationships with them. Perhaps he was cranky because it was Mira he was talking to. Lebas was forced to say goodbye to Mira, but just as he moved to leave, a Honda motorbike approached the gate. Mira hopped onto the back of the bike, sitting side-saddle, then smiled and waved to Lebas in parting. He nodded back at her and smiled.

‘Don’t mess around with these people!’ Tegar said emphatically. ‘I don’t like you making trouble!’

Lebas snorted in dismissal, peeved that his brother was treating him like he was a little boy.

‘How am I making trouble, Mas? I’m just talking to her.’

‘The point is, I don’t like it!’

‘Whatever, weirdo.’

Tegar walked away, annoyed. He moved towards the factory office, while Lebas headed off in the opposite direction, equally annoyed.
