Chapter 11

“Hi, honey. Everything okay?”

“Mom, Jed and I have decided to go through with it. The wedding’s back on!”

“What? When?”

“Christmas Eve, like we’d originally planned. There’s so much to do, though. I need your help, Mom.”

“Of course. Whatever you need. You know that.”

“Thanks. I very much appreciate it. We should probably try and get everyone in the same place to have a little pow-wow and figure out what needs to be done.”

“Right. We can meet in my room. It’s 4001.”

“Are you kidding me?” Alissa asked. “Mom, that’s the presidential suite. That was supposed to be Cassandra and William’s room. I can’t believe they put you in Jed’s parents’ room. How did I not know this?”

“Well, you have been a bit distracted the last few days.”

“Oh my God! I’m getting married in two days. There is so much to do.”

“Yes, there is. I’ll see you in my room.”

“Everything all right?” Robert asked as Maddie lay the phone on the table.

“Um, yeah. The wedding’s back on. My daughter is getting married after all.”

“What?” He sat up and clapped his hands together. “Well, congratulations. That’s great news.” He arched one eyebrow and his grin faded. “It is great news, isn’t it?”

She twisted her lips and gave a one-shoulder shrug.

“Yes, of course. I hope so, anyway. I mean, I adore the young gentleman she’s marrying, and I think they genuinely do love each other. They put the brakes on for a reason, though. I just don’t want them to rush in out of a sense of panic and fear and then regret the decision. But I suppose only time will tell, right?”

“True, but one would like to believe that love can overcome all.”

“Yes, well, one must be realistic as well.”

Robert chuckled and gave a nod. “Yes, I suppose one must.”

“See, this is another one of those gray areas. It’s hard to know how involved to get when they’re adults. How much advice to give. When to step back. When to step in. When to just keep your mouth shut and hope for the best. I gotta go. We’re having a family meeting upstairs to figure out how to pull a wedding back together in two days.” She paused for a breath and smiled as she stood, and he stood with her. “Thanks for the coffee, Robert.”

“Look, if there’s anything I can do to help with the wedding, don’t hesitate to give me a call. You know, from the lodge standpoint, of course.”

“Oh, the lodge standpoint. Right. Darn. And here I thought you were volunteering to sing for the ceremony.”

“Definitely not!”

“That’s okay,” she said with a laugh at his horrified expression. “My mother is actually a renowned soprano, so as long as she doesn’t take too many muscle relaxers, she should able to pull it off. I have to get upstairs and warn her though. Thanks again.”
