Chapter Eight

“Momma, is that you?” I froze, watching the woman as she came closer.

Time stood still. Everything stood still. A dream, that was all this was, one very strange dream.

She never looked at me, just slowly came forward, glancing once at Luna before she turned to King Malfeon. This wasn’t real. She wasn’t real. I shook my head, trying to shake the fantasy from my mind.

She was the same…the exact same. If anything, she was more beautiful now than ever, with glowing skin, in a long, cream-colored toga gown. Gone was the tiredness from around her eyes, gone were her stained clothes and thin, malnourished body. She looked radiant.

She looked royal.

“I’m here,” she spoke to Malfeon. “That’s what you want, isn’t it? To see me…”

“For them to see you, Harlie,” the King barked. “After all, it’s been so long, don’t you agree?”

“Momma,” Luna whispered, her voice shaking. “Momma, is that you?”

My sister’s lips trembled as she reached for this woman…this woman who looked so much like our mother. But she wasn’t acting like it by being here, dressed so prettily while Father was tied up in chains.

My gut clenched tight. No, she wasn’t acting like our mother at all.

“Who are you?” I asked, staring at her.

Only then did she glance my way…and I saw the flinch in her eyes as our gazes connected. Her lips parted, but there were no words, not for me. Desperation raged for a second before it was swallowed by a stony mask. This woman wasn’t the one I’d known...she wasn’t the mother who’d cared and comforted. She was a shell, an empty, hollow shell.

That shell turned back to Malfeon and took a step forward, moving to his side. “I’m here,” she said, stepping into his view. “You don’t need them. They aren’t important.”

Aren’t important?

I clenched my jaw as pain furrowed my sister's brow. Luna’s hand trembled before it dropped to her side.

“You’ve stressed yourself out again, haven’t you?” our mother murmured to the King. She reached out to him, stopping an inch from touching his face. “Stressed yourself until you’re shaking. Are you cold, my love? Tell me...are you cold?”

I caught the tremble in her fingers.

Her words made no sense.

Nothing about this did.

Then a shudder coursed through her body. Cruelty flared in Malfeon’s eyes before he lashed out, grabbing hold of her wrist like a damn python and twisting.

My mother never cried out, never said a word.

“Don’t…” my dad croaked. He tried to lift his head. “Don’t hurt her.”

The words only made the King snarl with rage. But it was me the vicious bastard turned to before he shoved my mother back.

Dad shoved forwards until the chain around his neck snapped taut. “You want to hurt someone, Malfeon? I’m right here, or is that not pleasurable enough? Can’t stand to fight a man…not without an army behind you?”

Light shimmered from the jewels on the King’s neck as he slowly stepped toward my father.

“No,” I whispered and stepped toward them.

“Polaris, don’t,” Elide warned.

“You’d like that wouldn’t you, Leon?” Malfeon growled and moved forward, dragging my mother with him.
