CHAPTER TWELVE

THREE WORDS AND A TRIP

I WANT TO BACK UP just a bit to before I was married. Let’s travel back to the first week I arrived in Raleigh, North Carolina, from Richmond, Virginia, in the fall of 1976 to attend Meredith College. It’s important to view a few flashbacks with me just for the next minute or two—so you will understand the context of what actually happened next in my story.

I was a newly-arrived Meredith College freshman. One day I saw a large black-and-white poster in a store with a picture of the quarterback from North Carolina State on it. Only I didn’t know his full name, because the poster only had the word “Wolfpack” written across it in big letters; I thought that was an unusual last name. Terry later straightened me out, explaining, “Juana, Wolfpack is the nickname of the football team!”

I had no idea that, ten years later, God would speak to Terry in a mighty way through the young man on the poster, through the sharing of three words found in scripture: “I hate divorce.”

You see, Terry almost played football in college himself; he received several letters from smaller colleges who wanted him to play. But his high school coach got an assistant coaching position at State, and he convinced Terry to try out there as a walk-on. Terry had already decided he was going to attend State in the fall, so he decided to be a walk-on for the football team.

Everything changed, though, one hot summer day. Terry was enjoying an afternoon party, when a fellow football player left the party for football practice—and it was ninety degrees outside. Terry thought about it for a minute, and then decided he had had enough of long, hot afternoons practicing football. Instead, he decided to join a fraternity. This decision caused our paths to cross. (It’s amazing how “minor” decisions like this one can change the entire course of our lives—which is why it’s so important that we train ourselves to listen to and obey the Holy Spirit, so we can make the decisions He advises us to.)
