Kathleen had parked what looked like a fifteen-year-old Honda at the end of the walkway. Thank God, Grace thought, deciding not to look behind her as she entered the vehicle. She got in and immediately put her seatbelt on and locked the door.

“What’s going on?” Kathleen demanded.

Grace took a moment to breathe and collect herself. Slowly, she leaned to the right so she could see behind them. “That’s good, it’s a Sunday night so not much traffic.”

“Why is that good?” Kathleen wondered.

“Because if we’re being followed, another car on the road will be more obvious.”

“Jesus, Grace! I had a note thumb tacked to my front door with my name written in a big black marker. I guess…it scared me. Though now that I think about it, that’s not really your style. But the handwriting though…”

“How would you know my handwriting?’ Grace turned quickly.

“Drawing on my white board the other day. You’re a lefty. So’s the author of this note.” Kathleen pulled the crumpled page from her pocket and handed it to her.

I’ve completed the formula – meet me at my house at eight tonight. 147 Kensington.

“Where am I going, by the way?” Kathleen asked.

“Toward the university, someplace public with lots of people.”

“I thought you said it would be easier to spot a tail if – ”

“Tutu Corner, then left on College.”

“We’re on College,” Kathleen corrected her.

“I mean, Chapel. Alright, I did finish the formula and the handoff is at 10p.m. Tonight.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know yet. Someone will call me.” Grace kept her eyes on the rearview side mirror and saw a car fifty feet behind them with smallish round headlights. An older car, European, she surmised. “Turn right here, quickly, no turn signal.” She wrestled her phone out of her coat pocket and turned up the volume.

Kathleen obeyed and steered down a narrow residential street called Larkin.

“Good. Keep driving, not too fast.”

“Do you see someone?”

“I’m not sure. I…wait…yes. The headlights. Damn!”

“Someone’s tailing us?”

“Okay, let’s do another turn to be sure. This time, two quick ones. This is Larkin, so…at this stop sign, make a quick right, and then an immediate left. It’s the same street, just a little jog along the way.”

Grace stared into the side mirror as they turned left on the second half of Larkin. No lights yet.

“Here, pull over quickly and turn your off your lights. The engine, too. Quick!” One car drove past them but it was a huge SUV. Not the old Jag or smaller vintage European she expected. “Now scooch down low so your car looks vacant.”

Kathleen pulled the emergency brake after turning off the engine and slid down with her head on the center console.

Grace, half laying across Kathleen’s bucket passenger seat, bent her legs into Kathleen’s chest and rested her head on the passenger door. At this angle, she had a clear view to the side mirror as well as any cars headed down this part of Larkin. Two pedestrians walked arm in arm down the center of the street. A woman was laughing, her mate nuzzling her neck.
