âNh...â
White light hit Stellaâs eyelids, forcing her awake. As she opened her eyes, she noticed that the ceiling was surprisingly low.
âFinally awake, Vermillion?â
Stella turned and saw Kurono sitting in a chair next to her bed, smoking a cigarette.
âWhere...am I?â she asked groggily.
âYour room. You passed out from exhaustion after being hit by a killing blow from a Device in phantom form. There was no need for a doctor or iPS capsule, so we just brought you to your room and let you rest.â
Kurono blew out a puff of smoke.
Isnât smoking prohibited in the dorms?
However, Stella didnât bother reprimanding her.
âThat battle really happened, then,â Stella said in a heavy voice. Sheâd hoped it had just been a dream, but sadly, this was reality.
Stella had lost. Sheâd been defeated so thoroughly that she didnât even feel like making excuses for it.
âHaah...â she sighed. âSo, this is what losing feels like. Itâs been so long that Iâd forgotten.â
âDonât let it get to you. Kurogane even managed to beat me in a fightâthough I did give him a handicap. Heâs not the kind of guy you can beat at your level of strength.â
âHe beat you, the famous World Clock who was once ranked the third-strongest in the world? You canât be serious.â
Just how strong is he? Well, I guess I saw his strength firsthand.
No normal person could force themselves to expend every fiber of their being to fight at full strength for a minute. It took incredible determination and resolve. Ikki had truly become a Shura, the Asura of Buddhist legend.
Oh! Come to think of it, what happened to him after that?
âDirector, is he all right?â
Kurono nodded in response.
âHeâs fine. Well, heâs in a lot worse shape than you, but heâll live,â she replied, looking up at the top of the bunk bed.
Stella crawled out of her bed and looked up as well. Lying on the top bunk was Ikki. He was wearing a tank top, and his face was incredibly pale. If it wasnât for the fact that she could hear his faint breathing, she would have thought he was dead. That was how lifeless his body looked.
Ittou Shura was a Noble Art that used up all of Ikkiâs energy, including what his body would normally hold back to keep him alive. After a minute passed, he was left so weak that he could barely breathe. It was only natural that heâd ended up this way after beating Stella.
âHe did leave himself enough strength to limp back to his room and change out of his uniform. If he couldnât even do that then his Noble Art would be too unwieldy to use. Kuroganeâs able to make minor adjustments to how much of his energy heâll be using up.â
ââMinorâ sounds like the key word there.â
Despite having left himself some energy, Ikki was clearly in no state to fight.
Ittou Shura was a double-edged sword. If Ikki missed the right time to use it or failed to defeat his opponent in the allotted minute, heâd be completely helpless afterward.
