Frog Mom and Kids

Many different types of frogs lived in the rice fields and the river next to my village. They were natural mosquito and insect terminators. During the night, they sang in different tones, and it was like music. One particularly tiny frog could make huge sounds that could be heard a mile away during rainy nights. During the 1970s, farmers were told to use pesticides like DDT to kill the insects that ate the rice plants. In a few years, the insects were gone as well as the frogs and fish. However, the insects rebounded quickly because they adapted to the pesticides. The frogs and fish were not that lucky. When I visited my village a couple years ago, I did not see or hear many frogs as I had before.

I saw these two frogs in my friends’ pond in Michigan. They reminded me of the frogs in China. I took a few pictures when the mother was small. Two years later, I saw her again with babies. In this painting I imagined myself as one of them, swimming, playing and viewing the rocks and weeds from their angles.
