Tummy of an Angel

Even a child is known by his doings.

Proverbs 20:11

As an adoptive parent, I had rehearsed in my head all of the insightful answers I was going to provide when my son, Nathan, asked me questions about his adoption.

One night while preparing for bed, when he was only three-and-a-half years old, he asked to see his baby pictures. The first pictures in the album were of a baby shower for him before he was born. He wanted to know why he was not in the pictures. I carefully explained that he grew inside another woman’s tummy and that she wanted us to be his mommy and daddy. I emphasized how very special she was. I also shared with him how much we wanted him and had waited for him for fifteen years. When his questions ceased and he seemed satisfied, I tucked him in.

As I lay in bed, I prayed and hoped I had said all of the right things. I wanted so desperately for him to understand what I was trying to convey.

The next morning, which happened to be my birthday, he ran up to me excitedly. He was extremely artistic and could not wait to show me the picture he had drawn.

My eyes filled with tears. He had drawn himself as a baby inside the tummy of an angel, with hearts and flowers all around her.

I knew that moment he understood.
