This recipe came from my Maw Maw Cart, but it’s my variation. Well, my variation, thanks to the help of my mother-in-law, Janis. Maw Maw Cart didn’t write down the recipe, but Janis, who is a far more talented baker than I am, helped me chase the taste memory. (Bless her.) If you’re related to me and reading this, and you have Maw Maw’s actual recipe, can you send it over?

There was a split in the family about whether to have nuts or not, so Maw Maw Cart made them both with and without. I’m on the no-nut side. I don’t like nuts in pastries. In ice cream, I love them. But put a pecan in a cookie and you can go fuck yourself.
