A loud beeping jolts me awake. The walls shake violently and a scream cuts through the chaos, high-pitched with fear. I jump to my feet, but we drop and Iâm weightless for a moment as my heels lift into the air. Then the direction shifts and I slam into the floor, clutching the back of a chair to keep from falling. Grabbing the walls as I go, I make my way to the front of the invention, where alarms ring and lights flash. The prince moves his hands rapidly across the display.
âWhatâs going on?â
The prince holds up his hand to signal he canât respond, but Ella turns toward me, eyes wide and somewhat bloodshot. We jerk sideways and I grip both of their chairs to keep from slamming into the wall.
âWeâre falling!â Ella screams.
âWeâre not falling,â the prince interjects, casting a quick glance over his shoulder. I catch his eyes just long enough to see legitimate panic in them, and then he turns his attention back to the switches. âWeâre landing against our will.â
âNymia, weâre dropping out of the sky! What do we do?â
How should I know? Iâm not the one who suggested flying in the first placeâit always seemed like a ridiculous idea to me. Though I donât say that, because, well, what good would it do?
The prince answers for me. âElla, everything is going to be fine. I promise. Now, get in the back and buckle up.â His voice never waversâitâs firm and commanding, but not mean. Itâs just strong enough to force Ella to listen. âNymia, I could use a hand.â
âWhich one?â I ask, holding out my palms.
He shakes his head, fighting a smile, and points to the spot Ella vacated. âJust sit down.â
I do, then secure the straps across my chest and waist. Outside the window thereâs nothing but endless gray, dark and foreboding. Inside, thereâs a darkness too. Half of the flashing colors I saw before are out.
âWhat happened?â
âWell, funny thing. Thereâs an old human saying, what goes up must come down, and I mightâve forgotten about the down part when we left London.â
âHuh?â I furrow my brow.
The prince is gripping the steering handles so hard his fingers have gone paleâwell, paler. Yet itâs the thin stretch of his lips that concerns me the most. âMost flights between the UK and America these days go between London and Boston, since the US government moved there after Washington, DC, vanished off the face of the planet. So, I put the flight route coordinates in for Logan International Airport. But, well, weâre flying a stolen jetâand not just any stolen jet, but the private plane for the royal family, so we canât exactly land in such a public spot. The army would be on us in seconds. Iâve already been fielding calls from ground control requesting our flight information, but I shut down the comm system, so hopefully they wonât be able to track us so easily.â
âWhat does all of this mean?â
âWell, New York City, which used to be one of Americaâs biggest cities, has been under the control of magic for the past decade.
