Chapter 12

Sometimes, silence is all that there is. Sometimes, that’s all that is needed.

Only now, an incessant beeping replaced the deafening silence that filled my ears. Quinn was hooked up to several machines and quite a few tubes. There was an IV in her hand and up her nose. The doctor had informed me after a toxicology report that Quinn had consumed so much alcohol and took so many drugs. It surprised him she’d survived at all.

It was heart-breaking.

Drugs. They take so much from the ones that dabble. I should know, I watched my spiteful mother choose them and men over me. Her own daughter. At seven years old, I was innocent, and yet she somehow blamed me for her drug-taking and her marriage breakdown. My father, lucky in a sense, had the balls to up and leave. Leaving me behind. I don’t remember him much, just that he had a pair of piercing blue eyes filled with more love for me than my mother’s. He left my heart broken well before any other guy had a chance. Sure, my ex-boyfriend had broken my trust and bruised my heart in some sense. But my father leaving, abandoning me—that left a hole that would never truly be filled or tampered with.
