“It should only be another half hour,” Red said as I glanced at the clock.

I was so nervous. I had been distracted for most of the drive, thinking about that moment Red held me in his arms and stared at me like he had something he desperately needed to tell me. I was dying to know what was running through his mind at that moment, but I couldn’t bring myself to ask him. And as we got further from the hotel, the reality of what we were about to do sank in and butterflies took flight in my stomach.

“I think I might puke.”

“You’ll be fine. I’ll be right there with you.”

I pressed my hand to my stomach and did my best to swallow down the bile threatening to spew from my mouth. “I can’t do this, Red. I don’t want to see him.”

“He’s your dad. Don’t you want closure?”

I shook my head wildly. At that moment, I didn’t want to ever see him again. I wasn’t prepared to see him with his family, or hear the excuses as to why he ghosted me.

“Zoe, if you don’t see him, you’ll always wonder.”

“About what?”

“Everything. When you get there, you’ll know what you need to say to him.”

“And what if I show up and he doesn’t even want to see me? Do you even know if he’s home?”

“He’s there,” he answered tersely, his fist clenching on the steering wheel.

“So, how does this go?” I asked, taking a deep breath.

“When we get there, you should talk to him, ask him anything you want to know. After that’s done, we’ll get down to business.”

“And you’re sure we’ll get the money?”

“Positive.”

“Do you think he’ll try and fight?”

He shook his head slightly. “I highly doubt it. Trust me on this,” he said, grabbing my hand and bringing it to rest on the console with his.

I wanted to believe him, but I wasn’t so sure. My daddy had been nothing but a failure in my eyes, and I highly doubted he would come through for us now. When we finally pulled in the driveway, I was pretty sure I was on the verge of passing out from lack of oxygen. The only reason I only got out of the truck was because Red came around and hauled me out. He had to hold me up the entire walk to the front door.

“It’s going to be okay,” he whispered in my ear just after he knocked.

I stood there, my head swimming as I waited for the door to swing open. And when it did, I was slapped in the face with the woman that replaced my mother. She was beautiful, dressed to the nines, and had perfect skin. In fact, if Red hadn’t already pointed it out to me, I might have missed how much I dressed like this woman. It only made my stomach roil more than before.

“Ma’am, we’re looking for Christopher Thatcher.”

“May I ask who’s calling?”

She didn’t even know who I was. The bitch came in and took over my life and she didn’t even know I was standing right in front of her.
