A Lecture at a Congress of Mathematicians

During the summer of 1840, Babbage returned to Europe, this time traveling to France and Italy. Lyons, France, had been the birthplace of the Jacquard loom. Babbage visited a factory there and saw one at work.

In Turin, Italy, Babbage addressed a gathering of Italian scientists, describing his plans for the Analytical Engine. He’d already found the Difference Engine to be beyond his means to build. He was hoping to avoid that problem with the new machine by finding some investors.

None came forward during Babbage’s stay in Italy. However, a young mathematician named Luigi Federico Menabrea took careful notes as he listened to Babbage speak. He followed up with letters as he worked on a report of the Analytical Engine’s mechanics. Two years later, Menabrea’s twenty-four-page essay was published in a Swiss journal.
