Chapter 6

IN the span of two days, Dorothy said good-bye to all of her team except Faith, who flew back and forth into Occupied France, delivering and collecting people, dropping supplies, and performing aerial reconnaissance. Over the course of several weeks, the team of seven women had grown exceptionally close, and now the estate, though busy as ever with mission control and training recruits, felt a bit empty and lonely.

Fortunately, Dorothy always worked during Temperance’s scheduled broadcast times, and often other times as well, fearing she’d end up missing an emergency broadcast. As soon as Temperance would realize she had “Charity” on the other end of the line, the two women fell into the habit of shorthand they’d created while working together. It added another impenetrable layer to the already tight code, because the shorthand remained in Temperance’s head instead of in a code book somewhere.

She received missives or information on supply drops from command then drafted them to Temperance, who then delivered them to Prudence, who acted as a courier with the commander on the ground. In return, Prudence gave Temperance information, and Temperance relayed it to Dorothy, who delivered it to the War Office. Back and forth they went, all the while planning the largest prison breakout of the war to date.

While other sections in occupied Europe had multiple radio operators, in Area 3 of France, Temperance operated alone. Without her, London had no eyes on the ground and the Resistance had no eyes in Command. The radio operator she replaced had broken under the interrogation of the Nazis and revealed the known locations of other wireless operators in the network. Until another operator finished her training, Temperance remained the only one in her network.

Dorothy had started working closely with another woman a week before, training her for the field. But, it would take weeks to train her enough to actively work undercover in France. In the meantime, Temperance remained their only voice.

Dorothy also received brief missives from Command that she encoded into the private code only she and Tom shared. He sent information to her, letters she never even saw unless he had a private message for her, and she sent information back to him. Information like what to do with the special Red Cross packages he received within the rations of supplies.

She knew, from the work she did while encoding the letters, that the packages contained tools and items needed for the escape plan. But, she couldn’t bear the thought of thinking about it too much. She’d worked out the variables over and over again and the math kept revealing the same terrifying truth: the odds of a successful escape attempt always came up very low. Even with all the outside help her Thomas, Sir Percy, and their fellow POWs received, the possibility remained mathematically certain that it couldn’t happen. But, as he’d assured her a couple of times now, he felt it his duty to attempt escape. Especially while in France, an area where friends and sympathizers on the ground could help hide or aid them and prevent recapture.
