I played with Ozzy’s chest hair as we cuddled in the predawn hours. Even with how comfortable the beds were in Sunrise House, I hadn’t been sleeping well. Spencer occasionally closed his eyes, seeming to sleep, but nothing had changed in the five days since he’d been rescued.

“You okay?” Ozzy’s sleepy voice mumbled.

“Just thinking,” I said softly. He hadn’t been sleeping well either, but I suspected that was mostly due to my insomnia.

“About?”

“Mom and Reginald still haven’t come to visit Spencer.”

Ozzy shifted, rearranging the two of us so that his one arm curled around me, and my head lay on his shoulder. “Yeah.” We’d both seen them on TV last night. A local piece on the recovery of the missing Maximillian heir. I’d been so infuriated, Ozzy had lay on top of me like a weighted blanket until I calmed down.

“Do you think it’s possible for me to get custody of him?” I asked suddenly. I knew it was a lot to ask Ozzy with our own baby on the way, a joy which had been overshadowed by my brother’s condition, but I just couldn’t stand the idea of him living in that sterile hellhole. It might be better than the stinking hellhole Ozzy had pulled him from, but that didn’t make it a good place for him.

“It would be a difficult case to make before a judge,” Ozzy said. “But whatever we need to do for Spencer, we’ll do it.”

My heart warmed with Ozzy’s unquestioning acceptance and support.

A soft yip perked both our ears up, and then a whine.

I pushed away from Ozzy’s warm body. “Sounds like Spencer’s having another nightmare.”

Ozzy sat halfway up. “Do you want me to come too?”

I pushed his chest down and kissed him. “You stay. Try and get some sleep.”

When I slipped into Spencer’s room, Renee, who had been one of his main nurses, was soothing his brow, murmuring softly to him. She looked up at me with a sad smile. “Another nightmare.”

I nodded. Who could blame him? It was almost worse to see him whimpering softly without moving, his little face grimacing, than it would have been to deal with a fighting fit of a nightmare like he’d had when he was little, before he’d gone missing.

“Mind if I take over for a bit?”

Renee shook her head. “Not at all. I’ll go get a snack and a drink if you’ll be here for a little while.”

I sat on the edge of my brother’s bed and stroked his forehead until he calmed, his body relaxing into some version of rest. My poor sweet, baby boy. What would it take to break him out of the prison of his mind?

I just wanted to comfort him, to be as close to him as possible. But the single bed was small, and he was hooked up to an IV that was feeding him nutrients, so there wasn’t much room for another human, not even a small one.

There was plenty of room for a tiny fox, however.

I stripped
