CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

Day 5: Afternoon (PST)

Los Angeles, California

“Your uncle knows we’re coming, right?” Noah asked as he put the Crown Vic into park.

The scheme had to have come right out of Wile E. Coyote’s playbook. They’d done so much to evade the cops, yet here they were, at the police station. “He does. I’m not sure how much help he’ll be, though.”

“Better than nothing,” Noah said.

“Just let me do the talking.”

“Funny,” Noah replied, “You’re good at that.”

McKenzie shot him a look then turned to the female officer working the front desk. “We’re here to see Detective Becker. I’m his niece.”

“Follow me,” she said.

They followed the receptionist through a hallway full of signs bearing phrases like, “Felons with Guns Do Time.” Cheery little place.

They came to a corner office. “Detective Becker, this girl says you’re expecting her,” the officer said.

Uncle Sal interjected. “Yes, Pilar. Thank you.”

“No problem.”

After the officer left, Uncle Sal sat up from where he’d been leaning back with his feet propped on the desk. He closed a file folder and tossed it aside.

“Bumble Bee,” he said, a grin spreading over his lips. He came around the desk to give her a hug.

It’d been so long since she’d last seen him. She didn’t remember his face having so many lines, but she did remember his eyes, bright and inquisitive as a sparrow. “Hi, Uncle Sal. This is my friend. The one I told you about.”

“I’m glad you came to see me. I’m not sure what I can do to help, but tell me what you need. We’ll go from there.”

The explanation about Noah’s partner must’ve struck a chord.

McKenzie searched for words.

I have to tell Uncle Sal we’re looking for someone named Chris without telling him she stood up Cody Randolph. The night he happened to meet Kimberly Lawson. Who happened to be connected to a radical feminist group that may or may not have hired Cody to assassinate the vice president.

They had no clue what they were looking for, but if Cody was the journaling type, chances were he’d jotted things down elsewhere, too. The FBI had probably already taken anything worth looking for, and yet, Noah knew Cody better than anyone. Damn.

Noah cut McKenzie off before she had the chance to answer. “You see, sir, Cody had this girlfriend named Chris, but I don’t know her number. I don’t even know her last name. I never met her, but he was my best friend and my partner. I just want to make sure she’s all right.” Then he added, “I know Cody would want me to do that for him.”

Her uncle bit his lip. “I could lose my job,” he said, more to himself than to them.

He considered Noah for a long moment then looked at McKenzie. “Most of the hotel room evidence has already been handed over to the FBI, but they haven’t moved it all to Quantico yet. The stuff they’ve deemed less important will probably catch dust here for months. Find what you need and get out.
