Block-Level Access

In block-level access, the VM sends reads and writes directly to a hard disk rather than relying on a file-level protocol like Common Internet File System (CIFS) or Network File System (NFS). Block-level access allows the reading and writing to a hard disk drive (HDD) at the physical hardware level. A disk controller on a server reads and writes the disks at the block level.

Compared to a file-based system, block level is both a faster and more efficient storage access method for an operating system. Block-level storage will be deployed over a storage area network in the cloud rather than a LAN as is most common for file-level access.

Block storage supports booting of server operating systems and is commonly deployed in a remote boot model. Virtual machines, hypervisors, databases, and operating systems running directly on a server platform all can access block storage remotely over the SAN.
