Chapter 7

Instead of waiting impatiently for Jack and Brandt to dress after their shower, Lori retreated to the craft room and began to unpack some of her supplies. She had shelves to fill, and couldn’t wait to see how the room would look once she had everything in its place. With the door open, she could hear the bickering already begin. “I feel like Asian tonight,” Brandt said. “Let’s go to Fat Dragon.”

“It’s Lori’s treat,” Jack told him. “She gets to pick.”

“So I’ll tell her I want Fat Dragon,” Brandt countered.

Jack answered, “I want you to shut up. She’ll take us where she wants to, and that’s that.”

“What the hell? You like Asian,” Brandt said.

“Maybe I don’t feel like eating it tonight,” Jack told him. “Maybe I want…I don’t know, Italian.”

“You always say you can eat spaghetti at home!” Brandt cried, shocked. “The one night I don’t want Italian, you suddenly have to have it?”

“Maybe I want a hoagie,” Jack said.

Lori shook her head, amused. She should take them to McDonald’s just for spite. Hey, technically it was going out, no?

“Don’t forget to take your tools out to the Jeep,” Jack said. His voice grew louder as he came down the hall towards the craft room, and a moment later, he ducked his head through the doorway. “Hey, babe. You about ready to leave? I’m starving.”

Lori smiled up at him from where she sat perched on her desk, a box of scrapbooking supplies on her lap. “Me, too. Be right there.”

A pile of tools were stacked just outside the door in the hallway. Jack had sorted them earlier into his and Brandt’s so everything could be returned to the shop on Monday morning. Now, as Lori climbed down off the desk, Jack picked up his tools from the pile and carried them down the stairs. They’d go into the locked toolbox in the bed of his pickup so he wouldn’t forget them in the morning.

She had to step over the remaining tools. Brandt was still in the bedroom—or rather, the bathroom, making sure his hair looked just right in the mirror above the sink. “Brandt!” she called out, heading for the stairs. “Don’t forget your tools! Jack said—”

“I heard him!” Brandt hollered back. “Jeez, I’ll get them, don’t worry.”

“Make sure you do.” Lori took the steps two at a time. “Hurry up, will you? I’m hungry!”

She heard the light in the bathroom click off, then heavy footsteps crossed the floor as Brandt rushed to catch up with her. “Hey, honey, I was thinking, what about—”

“We’re not going to Fat Dragon!” she said with a laugh.

He kicked the railing above her head as she disappeared downstairs. “Damn!”

“You pay next time,” she told him. “Then you get to choose.”

She didn’t go with Italian, because she thought Jack picked it only to be contrary. And though she liked Chinese well enough, she wasn’t feeling lo mein and rice, either. So she opted for Vietnamese, which had an Asian flavor to satisfy Brandt’s craving and bánh mì sandwiches for Jack.
