‘I’m intrigued to know why you called him Schrödinger’s Cat,’ Dad said over dinner.

‘It’s a long story,’ I said, catching Jamie’s eye.

Jamie pressed his thigh against mine. ‘Did Alex show you how she turned me into a ghost?’

‘Oh, the prism photo,’ Dad said, smiling. ‘Is that your phone?’

I turned and blinked at my phone, which was sitting on the breakfast bar.

‘Oh — yeah.’ I picked it up. Blocked ID. Who could that be? ‘Hello?’

‘Hi, Alex. It’s Doctor Yates here. How are you?’

‘I — I’m fine,’ I stammered, powering out of the dining room and down the hallway to my bedroom. ‘Are you calling about my bone marrow biopsy?’

‘I sure am,’ he said. My heart, which felt like a ripe tomato about to explode, slowed at the obvious delight in the BFG’s voice. He cleared his throat. ‘Although we still want you to have a bone marrow transplant, I’m pleased to tell you that you’re in complete remission.’

‘Oh,’ I said, dropping the phone. When I picked it up, Mum was standing in the doorway, looking as if her heart were about to explode, too. ‘Um, that’s great.’

‘You have a great evening, Alex,’ the BFG said. We must have both said goodbye, but I didn’t remember exactly what happened. I was too busy being hugged by my mother, and then my father and Hannah, and finally Jamie.

‘I knew you could do it, puss-cat,’ Jamie whispered. SC II appeared and wound around our legs like a ribbon.

‘I think we need to celebrate with chocolate and Game of Thrones,’ Dad announced.

I took Jamie by the hand and led him back down the hallway.

‘Nothing interferes with Game of Thrones night,’ I said. ‘Not even beating cancer.’
