Chapter Ten

"Where's our house guest?" asked Noah. It had been a week since Bobby and his boys left him for dead. He felt pretty good besides having a few sore ribs from where they'd kicked him. From sun up until sun down, Jake obsessed over his revenge. Noah wouldn't allow his younger brother to get hurt, or worse, on his behalf. He wasn’t young and dumb as he had been years ago. His only concern was the welfare of the horses. If McKay's men were ruthless enough to attack a lone man on his own land, they'd be capable of all sorts of evil when it came to the wild horses. He didn't have a plan or a clue, and with no help from the authorities he felt desperate and alone.

"She's bringing in the eggs." Jake washed his breakfast dishes in the sink.

"Maybe I'll take her into town today. Shopping or something. Women like that, right?"

Jake turned his head, his eyes narrowed. "Just the two of you?"

"I've been in bed most of last week. I owe her." There was less than a month left in Christina's vacation time. He felt like the two months were a ticking time bomb and his world would be destroyed on the day she left. Imagining life without her around the ranch was unbearable. How could he make her stay? What did he have to offer? Perhaps the closest he'd get to keeping her was if Jake took an interest. She could fall for Jake, just like every other woman in town seemed to fall victim. He was young, strong, and had an effect on the opposite sex. Noah was past his prime, with no education, and little to offer in terms of wooing. He had no experience with love, never having received any growing up. She deserved better. But damn if the thought of watching Jake and Christina in a loving relationship without him didn't tear him apart inside.

"I'd like to show her around the west end of the property, too." Did he note a hint of possessiveness in his brother's tone? Impossible. Jake had never shown interest in one woman.

Just then the woman in question burst in the front screen door bringing the freshness of the morning in with her. She was life, she was everything. Christina cradled wildflowers in one arm and a basket of eggs in the other. "Look what I found. Do you have a vase?"

Her wide eyed innocence made Noah melt in his seat. Was there anything he wouldn't do for her? He felt like a lowlife for desiring her in an unholy way. "Do we have a vase, Jake?" They'd never decorated the house or collected flowers. He doubted they had what she was looking for. Even more reason to take her shopping. He'd allow her to transform their masculine domain, change anything she liked.

Jake's face brightened, and a rare smile appeared on his face. "How about a milk pitcher? Would that do?" He rifled through the cupboards and pulled out two ceramic milk pitchers, one green, and one blue.
