17 – Meeting of Souls and Worlds

“Rory. Thank God.” Lynette opened the door before she’d even found the right key.

“Mum. I didn’t expect you back.”

“Needs must.” She headed to the kitchen. “Do you want tea? I imagine you’ve driven straight here from Oxford.”

“Please. How do you know? I haven’t been able to connect for a while.”

“A side effect of closing the rifts.” Her mother switched the kettle on. “They facilitated the communication between the worlds.”

“Molly. She must have told you.”

“Yep. I rang and she mentioned Archer’s absence. I’ve asked her to re-book your appointments for the next couple of days, just in case.”

“In case what? I saw Archer in his old bedroom at Ganieda’s house – he’s not …?” She couldn’t even think the words let alone say it.

“No. He will recover, but it may take some time to regenerate properly. There is a way to help him, and you may be the only person who …” She broke off as the kettle boiled.

“Who what? What happened?”

Her mother avoided looking at her as she poured boiling water into the mugs. “He outstayed his limit in your world.”

Rory fetched the milk. “I knew he was late, but I thought it was simply a day or so.”

Lynette shook her head. “No, he always added at least a week onto the date Malduc worked out to extend his stay. Which was fine for years, but after the recent events, it’s changed him – us. I can only stay over here for a few hours at a time since Geoff died.”

Even though she’d avoided the topic, the implications were clear. “You mean you and he were … were …”

“Sleeping together?” Lynette grabbed the biscuit tin and moved to the kitchen table. “That’s not something I feel comfortable discussing. Geoff provided me with many things, including much-needed male companionship and a tonic which helped me stay here longer. The world-swap ability deteriorates with age.”

Rory reached for a biscuit, avoiding her mother’s gaze. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to pry. The two of you obviously had chemistry, and I wouldn’t have minded a bit.”

Her mother smiled. “Thanks for your approbation. It appears mating with someone from the alternate world alters the body chemistry somehow; sort of anchors you there.”

“But you were over here for ages when you had me; for years at a time. You never speak about my father, but Geoff showed me what happened at Stonehenge.”

“Oh dear. I would have told you eventually, but I didn’t want to upset you.”

“Why? I saw you with a guy – did he rape you?”

“No!” Her mother rarely raised her voice. “Technically, I guess it could be argued, but–”

“So my father is some kind of …”

“Stop right there. I have no idea who your father is, but he can’t have been all bad because look how you turned out.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“No, he was caring and gentle, but I returned home and never saw him again. Three months into the pregnancy, I had problems. They disappeared when I came over here, so you were obviously meant for this world.
