TWENTY-FOUR

Gavon Reins

Savannah, GA

April 29, 12:10 am

Outbreak Day: 09

They were hidden in the darkness of the hallway, but Gavon thought he would get closer before being spotted. The three agents leaned on cubicle desks. Dante and Gavon both straightened their rifles on target. Gavon’s green holographic reticle centered on the back of the Mexican’s head. It was then the agent who faced them stiffened, and his eyes went wide. They opened fire, but the three agents fell out of their sight picture. When Gavon located them, the three were on the ground and had crawled into the nearby conference room along the right side of the hallway up ahead.

A string of pistol fire was returned, and the team took cover. Blake leaned out and exchanged volleys with the shooter while Gavon completed his tactical reload and stowed his magazine in an empty pouch.

Gavon gave a hand signal to Dante across the hall while waiting for the current exchange to end. He replied with a single nod of understanding. Immediately, Dante and Blake, to his rear, stepped into the hall and fired suppressing rounds in the direction of the target. The pair were halfway through their magazines by the time Gavon and Lee had jogged down the short hallway out of the darkness and into the light. They both peeled to the left at the first opportunity and took cover behind a long line of cubicles.

There was no mention of multiple women or children in the target packages, but Gavon heard their high-pitched screams. He was going to kill several more people than he planned to today.

The gunfire tracked along the wall behind Gavon and Lee. Sporadic rounds peppered the wall over their head, exploded keyboards, and sent dust flying from puncture marks in the cubicle walls. Lee fired from his position, garnering some of the attention while Gavon circled the long way toward the front of the office.

The FBI agents thought this was an even match and they were holding their own. That their untrained, confused return fire was winning a fight. They didn’t realize they were doing exactly what Gavon’s team wanted them to do. Shooting didn’t win a gunfight against professionals. Shooting and moving did.

Lee held position and changed angles to pop out and shoot, holding the enemy’s attention. Once Gavon was in position, he would have an angle on one or two of the shooters. Once they were down and the remaining targets were focused on, Gavon, Dante, Blake, and the rest of the team would move up to make entry into the room.

This fight was over before it began, he thought as he took the last corner before completing a half circle around the cubicles.

Gavon’s eyes had become so used to washing over each empty cubicle he passed that he nearly walked past the young FBI agent huddled in the last one. Agent Jake Vandyke’s eyes went wide with surprise, too. They were only a few feet away, but Jake’s pistol was already pointing in Gavon’s direction. His gunshots were panicked and in quick succession.
