That evening, Will again joined them at the table and spoke to those who spoke to him. He was otherwise quiet, though Carina could tell that he was listening carefully to everything that went on around him. Most of the talk was Deutsch, but he listened anyway.

Carina thought it wouldn't take long for him to pick up the language for himself, and when the meal was finished and he moved toward his tent, she approached him and said, "I can teach you our language if you would like to learn."

"I would, thank you," he said, answering without hesitation. "When I was young I heard it more often, but I've forgotten most of what I once knew. I can understand a word here and there, but no more."

"Do you have everything you need to sleep?" she asked, and he nodded.

"I do, but I have a question."

"Ask, and I will answer if I can."

"If I carried your ... well, anyone's minotaur milk with me, how long would it last before it loses the power to support me?" he asked.

"One day, roughly," she said, waggling a hand. "If you drank before setting out and had freshly drawn milk with you, you could drink it the next morning, but beyond that it would be no help. Why?"

"I need to go to Bronson's Place. I need footwear, clothing, a new phone. Where is the rover? You kept it, I hope?"

"Yes, though we had to have a man from the city drive it here. He was kind enough to set it up with your solar panels before leaving, and no one has touched it since. Making it to Bronson's Place should be possible, but you would be suffering by the time you came back."

Will asked, "Would you be willing to supply me with fresh milk tomorrow morning? The shoes are something I really do need. My feet will be a mess by the end of the week if I spend it walking around barefoot ... unless the milk heals me every time I drink it?"

Carina chuckled softly and said, "It does accelerate healing and is excellent for fighting diseases, but that won't save you from cuts and wear. If you must have shoes, you could always ask the liaison from the city for a pair."

"I'd prefer not. My understanding is they don't know who I am right now, but that could change anytime. My face is ... well known in Daytau. So far we have been lucky, but that can't last. Bronson is holding something for me that will make that easier, but I have to go get it. There's no way he'll come to me."

"Will you be safe without a weapon?" she asked.

Will thought about that, then waggled his hand and said, "Somewhat, but it would be better to have one. I'll check the rover. If my stashes are still in place, there'll be a pistol at least. When do you people wake up?"

Raising an eyebrow, she planted a hand on her hip and said, "When the sun rises, so do we.
