If you think recording at home will be too tough, you can take a more traditional approach and pay for time in a recording studio—preferably one that’s used by voice-over agencies. The people working in sound studios are experienced with voice talent and will offer the proper sound effects and background music to make your reel sound professional. However, this service comes at a price, so make sure you do your research to find a studio offering the best balance of professional treatment and affordable rates. No matter what, it’s important to remember that your demo is both the potential entry point to your career as a voice actor and your calling card. Spending a little money on it is probably a good idea. Above all, it should hold your listeners’ attention. If your demo is crackling and hard to hear, agents will spend less time focusing on your actual talent.

Once you decide you’re serious about becoming a voice actor, you’ll need to be available to go to many auditions, sometimes with very short notice. Auditions are held as frequently as two to three times a day if you live in major hubs like New York City or Los Angeles. You’ll either receive a script from your agent and perform the audition at your agent’s office, or you’ll go to a casting agency and be one of many other candidates. In situations like this, you’re often given a script when you arrive and you’ll be asked to do a quick reading in front of casting agents. These auditions are recorded. The voice casting agency will then send the audition demo directly to their client—typically a production studio—for review.

Whether you enlist a talent agent to represent you or you’ve chosen to find work on your own, the key is marketing yourself. There’s a lot of competition in this field, so you need to make sure you’re promoting yourself to stand out from the crowd. It can take a long time before you get your first paying job, so be persistent.
