Chapter 10
For three weeks, I wasnât able to stick my head outside of the cavern. Far too cold and I learned to my shock, dangerous because spies did abound in the caverns. Not only that problem kept them on their toes, additionally I suffered two relapses into pneumonia and something else that had potentially damaged my heart.
âWhy can I not go outside?â Iâd asked Antony one dawn when Carob was out taking care of duties.
âItâs dangerous.â Antony stared at me and then heaved a quiet sigh. âFather is something of a guardian of the caverns. Iâm his assistant in training.â He ducked his head. âItâs thought that you are something of a curiosity to certain denizens.â
I nodded soberly. Iâd expected that. âThat information isnât a shock to me. What arenât you or your father telling me?â I didnât want to use his nameâthat would bring Carob into the cavern on some pretext or another.
Antony grinned at me. âEh, mostly that we know some of the more unscrupulous creatures are such that would sell information to anyone wanting to know about you.â He sobered. âHow are the pronunciations coming along?â Heâd begun helping me find the specific names the babies wanted.
It was our little collusion though I suspect the babies talked to Carob who in turn had suggested to Antony that he bring a small book with him that night of my hard delivery. I still wasnât sure what happened with Cormorant and forced his departure without a word of warning either.
The fact that Carob and Antony werenât the only denizens who abided there had startled me, but made sense. âSo do you leave every so often to travel elsewhere?â I wondered if I would remain mewed up here forever. Though that would suit me just fine, I knew the children would have to receive a broader view of the world as they grew older.
Antony smiled slightly. âI wasnât born up here though Carob wants me to believe it.â He shrugged with amusement. âNo, weâre not the only ones up here.â He stared at the fire in silence. âEventually Iâm going to follow in my sisterâs footsteps. My father and I have agreed upon that.â he met my gaze. âI wonât do that until after youâve gone through the basic training. Iâm beginning to think that youâre better suited to help my father.â
I detected no resentment in his demeanor when he said the shocking statements. I blinked at him thoughtfully. While pleased they were just the ones who made a permanent residence there, I worried that one day I would awaken and find theyâd disappeared one day.
âIâm wondering if I can find something to work on.â I held up my hands. âIâm not used to having idle hands.â
Antony promptly handed me a piece of stark white chalk that had an odd point at the end of it and a slate board. âHere, work on these letters.â He held out a small book for me to examine. âI found it in my belongings.
