“I told that stoned out airhead I wanted two double-beds,” growled Cody.

He glared at the queen-sized bed like it was a badly behaved child, then marched across the rough carpet and yanked the pink plastic phone off the cradle.

Cate stood there in the middle of the room and watched the big SEAL punch buttons on the phone. The pink plastic phone looked like a toy next to Cody’s big hands, she thought.

She touched her sore wrists and winced. Pain did not bother her much. If anything, physical pain made her feel alive in a weirdly appealing way. When she was younger she would pinch herself alone in her bedroom. Pinch herself all over. Hard, until red welts rose up on her arms and thighs. Until her nipples throbbed and turned dark red as she pulled on them.

Cate touched her hair and blinked away the heat she was feeling inside. She’d slept long and hard, she realized. Her mind was alert. Her vision was clear. She felt bright and fresh, like it was a new day.

Her clothes, however, were not bright and fresh. She could smell her armpits without even raising her arms and sniffing like she sometimes did when no one was looking. She glanced at the closed pink door that must be the restroom.

She used it quickly while Cody was on the phone. It was clean and small, with a white porcelain tub and a stainless steel shower like a little hook with a smiley face at the end. She imagined hot water with powerful pressure. She sighed at the tiny pink hotel soaps and cute bottles of green apple shampoo.

Then she heard Cody slam down the phone. She hurried out.

“He said the housekeeper didn’t show today and there aren’t any clean rooms with two beds,” Cody grumbled.

The phone was back in the cradle. It was on the bedside table. Cody glared at it, then looked over at her. Cate thought he looked red in the face. Like he was hot inside.

Cody glanced at the thermostat, then walked over and turned it all the way to blue. He pulled the curtains open. The room turned red from the neon. The sign was right outside the window.

Cate giggled as Cody cursed and pulled the curtains closed again. She looked at the bed. The bedspread was thick and looked heavy. It had turquoise flowers set on a black background. The turquoise was very bright.

Cate blinked and looked around the room. There was a small wooden desk in the corner. One straight-backed chair. One wood-framed armchair with blue upholstery that looked prickly. There was a floor-lamp with a cream shade.

There was no couch.

“You take the bed,” Cate offered. “I have slept well. I will be fine in the chair.” She glanced at the bathroom door. She was certain Cody could smell her from across the room. “Perhaps I will shower first, yes?”

“You will do no such thing,” said Cody gruffly.

She looked up, annoyed at first, then immediately confused. Cody was unbuckling that thick leather belt with the big buckle that had a bull on it.
