CHAPTER THIRTEEN

WHAT FELT LIKE a few hours passed and I had no idea if the sun was down or what time it was in Wonderland. Morpheus sat on a wooden stool, staring at me to make sure I did nothing to try to escape. I should have figured he would keep an eye on me, as he wasn’t stupid. He didn’t say anything, which I was glad for. I didn’t need him trying to convince me that I sucked again. Right now I definitely felt helpless.

But he had to leave sometime. I just knew it.

I thought back on everything that had happened thus far. Morpheus somehow was able to enter my dreams and then was able to catch me off guard and drag me to Wonderland. Everyone else was either on Earth or searching for me right now. So what did the future hold? Was I going to escape, or was I going to have to wait for them to figure it out? I pondered that for hours, wondering what I should do next.

“What exactly do you see in Malcolm?” Morpheus asked. I jumped, surprised as he hadn’t said two words to me the entire time.

I shrugged. “He’s kind to me. Caring… A complete gentleman. He will do anything to keep me safe.”

Morpheus gestured around. “Yet here you are.”

“I mean… No one could have seen this coming. And it was more my fault anyway.”

“Why were you alone in that garden? I thought I would have had to try harder to bring you to Wonderland without the others, but it was quite easy.”

“I… We… It’s none of your business.” I folded my arms. I really didn’t want to go into detail with him. He would just use it against me.

He smiled. “So you had a fight then. Oh, do tell.”

I shook my head. “I already said it’s none of your business.”

Morpheus stood up and walked over to the cell. He leaned on the bars and stared at me with a smirk. “Let me take a guess… You asked him a question and he didn’t answer.”

I frowned. That was pretty accurate. I didn’t know he could have known so much.

Oh right. He could read people’s minds.

“I don’t like you reading my mind. Please stop.”

“I’m not reading your mind. That takes too much of my power, and I need all that I have to defeat the Mad Hatter. No, I’m just making conclusions from what I know of you and of Malcolm.”

“So he has always kept secrets?” I asked. I knew I shouldn’t have pried into Malcolm’s past, but after the little fight we had, I needed to know if I was the only one he did this to. I wasn’t sure which scenario would be more reassuring, however. I didn’t like the idea that he kept secrets from everyone, but I also didn’t like if it was just me.

Morpheus laughed. “He is only secrets. Nothing he says is true. He only says what you want to hear to keep you around.”

I shook my head.
