Chapter XIII

Brother and sister sat quietly at the kitchen table, perusing their books.

Rex momentarily tore his eyes away from his literature to stare up at an obviously bored Jenny. He had seen this look all too often lately, and he liked it not.

“Maybe you’d like to get some fresh air for awhile, Jen? We can finish your lesson later.”

Jenny frowned. “I don’t know why you insist on continuing with these stupid lessons anyway! I no longer wish to learn.”

“Temper, temper, Jen. You know that Dray made me promise.”

She stood up and snapped her book shut. Stomping her foot, she retorted, “Dray, Dray, all you ever talk about is that man! Can’t you get it through your thick head that he is gone from our lives forever? So, it matters not that we obey his wishes. I don’t need no learning to live the rest of my life with a man like Wesley Adams!”

Rex smiled. “Correction: “any” learning.”

“Ooh! That is the last straw, Rex Stanton. Almighty scholar, I leave you to your sacred books!”

She stormed from the room in a huff, leaving a startled Rex behind.

The crisp air outside did little to cool her fevered temper. With clenched fists, she made her way to the barn, which was some distance behind the house.

She was brought up short on her trek. A tall, somewhat gawky blonde man doffed his hat to her in greeting. “Hello, ma’am.”

Jenny was taken aback to see a trespasser on her land. Hadn’t this man read the signs posted?

She answered stiffly, “What are you doing on my property, sir?”

The man grinned. “The name is Pat Duncan. My father has been seeing after you and your brother since your husband left.”

It was true that ever since Wesley and Dray had left some months back, a Mr. Will Duncan had stationed his person in their shed for the evenings. Mr. Duncan’s property was the nearest to them-- approximately seven miles away. Will Duncan was a tall, thin man like his son here, but whereas the former was a homely man, the latter was extraordinarily attractive.

“Ma’am?” The young man brought her out of her practiced scrutiny.

Jenny smiled and held out her hand. “I’m sorry I was so rude to you, Mr. Duncan. Tell me, how is it that after all these many months your father has never mentioned that he has a son?”

Pat Duncan smiled to display a set of sparkling clean, even, white teeth. “Well, ma’am, I betcha in all these months my father has said exactly ten words to ya. Yeah, my pa ain’t much fer words.”

Jenny laughed. “You’re right; he certainly is a quiet man. Say, have you come to tell me that your father won’t be coming tonight?”

Pat’s smile faded. “My ma is real sick.”

“Oh, I am sorry to hear that. Of course your father must see to her.”

“Well, yes ma’am, but I will be comin’ from now on. Pa promised your husband, and he ain’t about to break his word.”

“Are you sure? I don’t want to keep you from your mother.
