Chapter Twelve
“You two want to share?” Naicin said with mock irritation. “No fair using Mind Speak to talk about us behind our backs.”
Maica let out a triumphant cry and turned to us. His face was utterly transformed. The ugly, fearsome mask was gone and in its place was pure excitement.
“What have you discovered?” Thaid demanded, a lot less antagonistically than the last time they exchanged words.
Maica must have registered it too, because he momentarily paused before answering. I couldn’t interpret the expression that crossed his face for that brief time, but it seemed vulnerable.
I frowned and looked at Rhain, who simply smiled in that mysterious way I knew annoyed his brothers.
“We’re in the Rajhent Sector. This platform is a satellite around an uninhabitable planet not far from Gateway Gobbledygook.”
I jerked back in shock, wondering what Maica meant by gobbledygook.
“Gateway what?” I exclaimed.
Maica repeated what he said and this time it sounded like Gateway Jibberish. My expression of confusion registered with the others and they laughed.
“When something goes beyond a person’s reference point to understand,” Thaid explained aloud so all could hear the exchange and comment if they wished. “It will be equated with whatever word or words convey meaninglessness. The Gateway has a series of digits that have no correlation to English or any human language. Or ours, for that matter. But we’ve learned to understand them over time. There’s a lot of unintelligible communication between life-forms across the confederacy.”
“Can we get back to the point or do you want her to delay us for a little longer so the enemy has time to send reinforcements?” Maica’s snide remark hit home, and I shut my mouth tight.
Through gritted teeth Rhain said, “Go on. So we are not far from the other end of the gateway where we were brought down. But we’re nowhere near Gaia. How long have they had you, Bronwyn?”
I shrugged. “I thought it was only a couple of days ago. But when I woke up I had no blisters on my feet, and I would have had them if it had only been the night before that I was taken. To be honest, I don’t know. Not years. I don’t look any different in a mirror. But now I come to think of it, my hair seems longer. A couple of inches longer.”
“How fast does human hair grow?”
I shrugged again. “I probably grow an inch of hair every few months. Mom used to have haircuts every six weeks. I remember that because it was her one indulgence. I don’t remember the last time I had a haircut. I don’t bother about things like that.”
I knew I was waffling again, but it worried me every time I thought about my kidnapping. Now I was finding out I was light years from home. How was I ever going to find my way back?
“Obviously. Your hair looks like a Jekpa nested in it,” Maica sniped without real malice.
“It’s called a messy bun and it’s easy. I like easy.”
I knew I was setting myself up for a play on the word easy, but oddly enough Maica didn’t pick it up.
