Chapter 6
Never
Blaine and the guard stepped out of the building and parted ways, Blaine heading back to the castle. He noticed that he had a spring in his step, and as he walked back through the streets, he smiled and returned the greetings of everyone who saluted him. He felt much different from he had prior to his encounter with Ness.
But a part of him was quite nervous. Speaking to his father about the reunion of the clans would be tantamount to treason. He could only imagine what the laird would say when he found out that his son, his immediate heir, was so far gone that he might as well sport McGregor colors.
By the time he arrived at the castle, the laird had awakened. Blaine found him in his study, poring over a stack of papers, his nose so low it was almost touching the desk.
âAh, guid mornin, son,â Manfred said rather brightly, straightening when he saw his son come in. âOut for a morning walk, I suppose? Did ye ken that yer brother Hiram has arrived?â
âAye,â Blaine said hastily. âFather, there is something I wish to discuss with ye.â
âMmhmm?â
Blaine hesitated for a few seconds. This was it. He silently prayed his father did not run him through with a sword the moment the words were out of his mouth.
âI have seen the McGregor lass.â
The laird shot to his feet, but his expression was not one of anger; rather, he looked pleased. âSo soon! This is wonderful news. Where is she?â
âSheâ¦she is gone.â
âGone?â Manfredâs eyes widened. There was no mistaking the look of indignation on his face. âWhit do ye mean gone? How could ye let her slip through yer fingers?â
âShe did not slip through anyoneâs fingers,â Blaine said, bracing himself for the storm he knew was about to come. âI let her leave in peace.â He did not add that it was a guard who had brought the news that Ness was in Argyll; there was no point telling him that.
âWhit?â The lairdâs voice was dangerously calm. âYe are telling me that a McGregorânot just any McGregor but the daughter of their laird himselfâtrespassed on Campbell soil and instead of killing her for it, instead of bringing her to me, ye allowed her to leave Argyll completely unharmed?â
âYe are correct, Father.â
âIs this part of yer plan to make the McGregors believe that we are on their side?â Manfred was looking at his son with a gleam of hope in his eyes. âTell me it is, son, tell me.â
âNot at all. I let her go so that her father would ken she was alright, and so ye would not be able to kill her.â
This seemed to be too much for Manfred. With a cry of fury, he lunged at his son, reaching for his sword. He paused in his movements and doubled over, coughing uncontrollably, his eyes narrowing as he realized his sword was not strapped to his waist.
âWould ye kill me if ye had a sword, Father?â Blaine was surprisingly calm.
