Chapter Eleven

Though Claire was still feeling a little shaky inside after the long drive back to Twilight Valley, she took her phone out of her pocket and pulled up Devin’s contact information.

He answered on the first ring. “You’re home?”

“We’re home,” she confirmed. “And Brooke was right. Ed’s fine. In fact, right now, he’s chasing Daisy and Lily. Well, he’s on one side of the fence and they’re on the other, but that seems to be what they do.”

“How are you?” Devin asked her.

“Embarrassed.”

“There’s no reason to feel embarrassed. We were both worried about Ed.”

But she was the only one who’d been crying when they rushed into the veterinarian clinic.

She was crying again now, but they were tears of relief this time and Devin couldn’t see them.

“And I’m hungry,” she admitted.

“Hungry?”

“I ordered pizza from Jo’s for dinner, but then everything happened with Ed and I completely forgot about it.”

“Do you want me to pick it up and bring it out to you?”

“I couldn’t ask you to do that,” she protested.

“You didn’t ask—I offered.”

“I could make something here,” she said. And if she did so, she’d probably be eating before Devin could make the trip to the ranch. “But I really was craving pizza.”

“I’ll be there in half an hour.”

He was true to his word.

Of course, the pizza had been sitting on the counter at Jo’s for a while by the time he showed up, and then on the passenger seat of his SUV for another thirty minutes, so it was barely lukewarm by the time he delivered it.

“Jo said that ten minutes in a four-hundred-degree oven should heat it up nicely.”

“Cold pizza is better than no pizza,” she said. “And I’m too hungry to wait even ten more minutes. Unless you want it heated?”

“Oh.” He was taken aback by the question. “I, um, wasn’t planning on staying.”

“Did you really think I’d let you pick up my pizza, deliver it to me and then send you away without sharing it?” She tugged him over the threshold, making it clear that she wanted him to stay.

“It’s a large,” he noted, following her into the house. “I thought maybe you were expecting company.”

“I always order a large, so that I have leftovers,” she told him.

“And if I stay, I’ll deprive you of leftovers,” he pointed out.

She turned to face him then. “Devin,” she said patiently, “I would very much like you to stay and have dinner with me.”

“Okay,” he finally relented. Because he very much wanted to stay.

“Do you mind if we eat in the family room so we can watch the ball game?” Claire said. “The Astros are playing the A’s.”

Of course he didn’t mind. But he was surprised. “You like baseball?”

“What’s not to like?”

And with those words, Devin fell halfway in love with her—at least until he realized that she was cheering for the wrong team.

While they argued about the game and ate their pizza, Ed stuck close by, lying on the carpet in front of the TV chewing on an elk antler.
