CHAPTER 15
âIâm so glad you all called me,â Maggie said. âI was going to call you all later, but this is much better, because not everyone is here yet. So, Happy Thanksgiving family.â
Beth held her iPad in front of her face. âHi Mom, we have a surprise for you,â she said. âIs Paolo there?â
âIâm here,â Paolo answered.
âHey Maggie, hi Paolo,â Emily yelled as she moved in front of the camera.
âEmily! Oh my goodness, honey. How are you feeling? Is your mother with you?â
âIâm here,â Eve said. âYour lovely daughter, Beth, was kind enough to invite us. Weâre only sorry that you and Paolo arenât here. Emily thinks of him as her second father.â
âThatâs right,â Emily added. âI wouldnât be alive today if you hadnât donated your kidney. Iâll never be able to thank you enough. Happy Thanksgiving.â
Maggie looked at Paolo, who was smiling.
âHappy Thanksgiving to you both,â Paolo said. âIâm glad youâre doing well. You look wonderful.â
âYou certainly surprised us. Who else is there?â Maggie asked.
âEveryone,â Beth said.
âHi Mom,â Lauren yelled from another room. âSorry, I was trying to keep Jeff from sneaking some stuffing. The baby is sleeping, but Olivia and Lily are here.â Lauren turned the iPad around to face her two daughters.
âGirls! Say hello to your grandmother.â
Olivia and Lilly waved. âHi Grandma,â they said, and then turned back to watching television.
âTheyâre growing up. They used to get excited when we had company, now all they want to do is watch television or talk on the phone,â Lauren said.
âThatâs okay, I understand. You were like that once, too.â
âMichael and Brea are here with the kids, so Iâm going to give the iPad to them so you can say hello.â
âHey Mom, Happy Thanksgiving,â Michael and Brea said in unison. âQuinn and Cora just went upstairs to see the baby. I told them to be quiet, and hopefully they wonât wake Daniel. You know how it is when a new baby comes into the family, especially for children, they just love a new baby.â
âSpeaking of babies, where is my baby?â Maggie asked.
Christopher and Becca smiled and waved into the camera.
âHappy Thanksgiving, Mom,â Christopher said.
âHow are you feeling Becca?â Maggie asked
âThis has been a rough first trimester, and the hours Iâm keeping these days donât help. I started feeling better a few days ago. I think Iâm starting to turn a corner,â she said.
âThatâs great,â Maggie said. âCiara told me you and Christopher are coming to Captiva a week before Christmas, is that right?â
âYes, I need a break from work. Chris tells me all the time that we probably wonât have another chance for a vacation before the baby comes, and I should do it now that I can. Besides, I want to see Dad and my brothers. I wish theyâd come up to Boston, but I love it here. Maybe you can talk them into a visit this spring when you see them later today.â
Maggie laughed. âIâll do my best.â
Beth came back in front of the camera. âIs Grandma there?â
âNo, and Iâm surprised.
