Chapter sixteen

Maggie

"Thanks for the ride. I'm grateful," I say as I step out of Jake's car, offering a short wave of gratitude as he pulls away from the sidewalk close to the junction. He had dropped Ella off at the house and was going to use my route to work to return, so he offered a ride. The whole ride from home to the junction where he dropped me was silent. I tried not to converse with him, and the moment was awkward as Jake kept quiet, too.

I start walking towards my workplace, Cherries, just a five-minute stroll from where Jake dropped me off. The city bustles around me as I walk on the sidewalk, lost in my thoughts about my recent visit to Little Feet in Livingston.

I'd spent hours at Little Feet, hoping to get clues that could lead me to finding my child. Although I am still awaiting the answers I seek immediately, I plan to lay my hands on something soon.

Immediately, I pull my phone from my back pocket, searching through my contacts. I tap a number to dial, and the name flashes on the screen. It's Victoria Johnson, the administrator at Little Feet. We spoke the day before, and I'm eager to know if she has made any progress in locating the files I'm looking for.

"Hello, Victoria," I greet as she answers the call.

"Hi, Maggie," she replies. "I understand your eagerness, but I want you to be calm. You come off as desperate. You should remain calm and be patient. I promise to let you know once I find the files you're looking for."

I sigh, trying to quell my frustration. I know she’s right, but my desire to uncover the truth makes it hard to stay patient. "Okay, I'll try to be patient," I say, trying to sound calmer than I feel.

The call ends, and I continue on my way to Cherries. A teenage boy rides past me on a bicycle. He pedals the wheels swiftly as he vanishes from my sight in the next turn. In front of me, a boy and girl walk towards me, their arms cuffed together. They both seem to be in their late teens, around eighteen and nineteen.

I remember the days when young love was a castle I lived in. It was a time of innocent hearts and boundless dreams, where every touch felt like magic, and every word was a promise of forever. Ethan was the prince of my fairy tale, and I was his princess. We were inseparable, spending every moment together, exploring the world and each other.

We would stroll hand in hand through the streets of our small town on our way home after school, laughing and whispering sweet nothings into each other's ears. Sometimes, we would sit by the riverbank, skipping stones and sharing dreams of the future. Other times, we would dance under the stars at the town's annual summer festival, lost in each other's arms.

I cherish those moments, even as fleeting as they were. Ethan was the light of my life, and I was the warmth in his.
